flea and tick preventatives
For every flea found on a pet, there may be thousands of pupae, larvae, and eggs in the environment - in bedding, carpets, furniture and the yard. Indoors, fleas can quickly develop into a year round problem. Fleas can transmit tapeworms, cause anemia, and many dogs and cats are allergic to their bites. Severe itching and subsequent skin infections can be caused by a single flea bite in an allergic pet. Ticks may carry the organisms responsible for Lyme's disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis and other potentially serious diseases. The West Nile Virus has many people concerned about mosquito bite prevention. A new product for dogs only, K9 Advantix, has permethrins which have been shown to be very effective in preventing mosquito bites in treated dogs. There are several good products available which can help prevent exposure to these pests. Ask us which may be best for your pet. Some products claiming to be safe and effective can be dangerous.
